Responsible for continuity of engine
Its the heavy circular wheel connected to the engine output shaft, energy storage unit, storing the energy in the form of inertia.
Functions of flywheel
- It keeps the engine running smooth
- It keeps the engine running in 3 non-power strokes ( for 4 stroke engine) and it stores the part of energy of the power stroke as the inertia of flywheel hence maintains power
In the graph it can be seen that, if the flywheel would not be there we would be having engine running with jerks. The engine with flywheel still having little bump in the graph, this can be removed by using larger flywheel. Larger the flywheel more smoother running but larger flywheel have some cons also
Disadvantages of larger flywheels
- It will need larger energy to move the larger flywheel
- It will increase the weight of the vehicle
Construction of flywheel
- Flywheel starter ring gear
- Friction surface for clutch
Flybus Mechanical Hybrid System
Typically used in stop start vehicle such as buses, trucks
etc
It is the new innovation in the automobiles, to
recover the kinetic energy of the vehicle that will be otherwise wasted at the time of braking. Its the
environment friendly hence also know as green brakes. The kinetic energy of
vehicle is converted into the rotational kinetic energy of heavy fly wheel in
the vehicles which is controlled to max speed is 60000 rpm and this energy of flywheel further give the torque to wheel
which makes the vehicle accelerate by consuming less power from the engine. It improves
the fuel economy and decreases co2 emission.
